[DIARI] Reasons you should not modify your car!

5 Reasons you should not modify your car!

The vehicle modification is a huge business, and we understand why. But here are five reasons you should leave power and handling boosts to the professionals.

Manufacturers these days build cars to cater to a wide demographic. As such most of their offerings lack individuality, flair and coolness. Most of what you get these days are generic and boring vehicles with watered down styling, basically cars that only your chemistry teacher would consider ‘cool’.

As such, many drive their brand new cars off the showroom floor and straight into the nearest tuning shop. Wheels, tyres, DRLs, sports seats and everything else in between are purchased without a second thought. Though the reasons for doing so are understandable, here are five reasons why you should leave your car bone stock.

Reason 1: It lowers your resale value
As much as you would like to think that this is going to be your one and only car, it probably won’t be. Eventually, something else will come along that will offer the thrills and spills that your car just cannot deliver. As such, keep the mods to a minimum because not many are going to think that that massive rear spoiler adds character to your Japanese econobox.

Reason 2: It may look cool but is it as safe as you think it is?
Most manufacturers spend millions on R&D as well as crash testing to make sure, that during an impact, a vehicle's body cushions the blow to the occupants. Fitting aftermarket bonnets and bumpers may increase visual appeal, but might compromise the body’s structural integrity during a crash.

Reason 3: A performance increase may not be good for mechanical longevity.
We all want it, but boosting power output might shorten the lifespan of certain components. In the case of turbocharged cars, remapping the ECU might give you 10-20bhp more but that will significantly shorten the lifespan of your turbocharger.

Reason 4: Unless it has been tested, it will not increase downforce.
Installing a GT wing on your boot doesn’t mean the car will be able to corner like it’s on rails, far from it. In most cases, it causes aerodynamic drag, lowers top speed and increases fuel consumption.

Reason 5: A lowered stance is a bad idea for Malaysian roads.
Lowering the ride height of a vehicle does have its advantages. By doing this, you also lower the centre of gravity, meaning it will be less likely to topple over at high speeds. But the closer your car is to the ground, the more likely it is to scrap speed bumps.

Many want to modify their cars, and though we aren’t against it, we advise that you exercise caution when doing so. Make sure that you upgrade within reason. As always drive safe and obey the rules of the road.
